Make it happen! And the winner is...
The 'Make it happen!' challenge last week demonstrated the amazing depth of local talent we have in the Venture Café Sydney Community.
And the winner is...
Sophia Kloosterman for the B&B Highway!
1 in 3 bites of food are connected to pollinators, and with 40% of our insect species threatened with extinction, it is crucial that we start facilitating habitats to protect these species. The B&B Highway stands for Bed and Breakfasts for Bees, Butterflies, Birds, and Biodiversity. This project is run by FoodFaith, a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on sustainability and biodiversity.
Our B&B Highway project is establishing pollinator gardens across our urban areas to tackle the concerning decline in pollinators, as well as a citizen science project to connect information from our gardens to researchers at universities. The aim of this is to allow an expansion of knowledge on pollinators throughout urban environments, and to get educational institutions involved in learning about and improving our biodiversity.
We are currently in the process of starting up a project in the Ryde Community, which involves implementing pollinator gardens, native stingless beehives, insect hotels and educational workshops for the students to take an active role in promoting biodiversity and further research to accommodate for our pollinators in urban areas.
We need as much help as we can get, as we plan on taking this project to as many communities as possible in the Sydney area, and hopefully expanding even further into the future. Let's start making Sydney a sanctuary for people and pollinators.
A big shout out to all the finalists who made it happen by bringing their ideas to the table - each project is worthy of support.
Thank you to Karen Li, Nicholas Kakaroubas, Brigit Busicchia and Rajesh Bhardwaj for their inspiring ideas!
